a saga

The Lion series - H.M. Manuelle

Some families carry history in their bones. The Leeuw Series is a gripping saga about generations shaped by war, loss, love, and secrets that remain hidden for decades.

Leeuw is an epic family saga that unfolds across four continents and more than eight decades — from the diamond district of Antwerp to the concentration camps of Poland, from the Flemish Ardennes to the salons of England, from the timber forests of Ghana to the underground tunnels of Vietnam.

At its heart are four families whose lives become inextricably intertwined by history. Their paths collide at the pivotal moments of the twentieth century — the war years in Auschwitz, Ghanaian independence, the Innovation department store fire, the moon landing, Woodstock, and the mud of Vietnam.

It is a story about people who were broken by history, yet still stood tall. About secrets that survive across generations. About love that defies borders — of language, of race, of war. About guilt that takes root in families and only reveals itself decades later.

And somewhere in the future, in December 2015 in a castle in Brakel, a murder case awaits that connects everything.

The series features a rich cast of characters with interwoven storylines, written in a smooth and accessible style. Thanks to meticulous historical research, readers will recognise real events, places, and eras — fiction and reality flow seamlessly into one another.

About

LION 1

IN SHORT

In 2015, the usually quiet Nederbrakel was shaken by a gruesome double murder in 'the Little Castle'. There was no trace of the perpetrator, and the law enforcement services were baffled by a possible motive. The crime received extensive national press coverage as the victims were two innocent nuns.

The story then jumps back to 1933, the year Adolf Hitler takes office as Chancellor of Germany. In Antwerp, the Jewish Van Leeuwen family welcomes their first child, a girl named Sookie. During her childhood, antisemitism spreads like weeds into her city. When the war breaks out, the Nazis arrest part of the Van Leeuwen family.

Barely nine-year-old Sookie is forced to flee. Together with her cousin, she manages to escape the German occupiers in Antwerp at the very last minute. With the help of the resistance, she eventually ends up in the picturesque village of Nederbrakel, where she makes a fresh start.

However, her quiet life does not last long. After the war, Sookie discovers what happened to her family. Her world collapses. But an unexpected new family member will change everything…

IN SHORT

As part of the investigation into the murders at 't Kasteeltje, Lieve, Sookie's sister, is questioned by the police. Is she telling the whole truth? Or is the past slowly catching up with her?

Back to January 1962, where an unwanted pregnancy drives Sookie, Lieve, and Damien to the Gold Coast of Ghana. The Gyata family welcomes them with open arms.

Sookie and Lieve start working at the orphanage run by Marie, a childhood friend of Sookie's, while Damien takes on the role of foreman at the timber company Gyata Timber Company (GTC). They are happy in Ghana.

Until July 1962, when a birth and a death change everything. Sookie and Damien move back to Belgium with the newborn baby Sheeva. Lieve stays in Ghana.

Meanwhile, an old acquaintance, Dolf Ketten, turns up in Assebroek. He becomes the new parish priest there, but he is not pious…

Lion 2 comes to a dramatic end on May 22, 1962, and with it, for the time being, the story...

LION III

IN SHORT

Sister Hilde confronts Lieve with the handkerchief she found at the crime scene. A discovery that raises more questions than answers.

After the devastating fire at the Innovation in Brussels, it is an anxious wait to see if Damien survived the fire.

They are playing with fire in Ghana too. Can someone become king with two murders on his conscience?

And what is going on with the Hughes family? Joe's suicide still leaves deep scars, and the forbidden relationship between Jack and Polly continues to have consequences.

However, it is also the summer in which the Vietnam War rages in full force and the son of Tom Caudill, CEO of Attilla Export, becomes involved.

We relive the 'Summer of '69' with the first man on the moon, Eddy Merckx's victory in the Tour de France, and of course, the legendary edition of the Woodstock music festival.

The lion keeps clawing, the saga continues inexorably.
